The devastation caused by Storm Goretti is clearly visible across Cornwall. In response, I am collecting ringed sections from as many fallen and damaged trees as possible, using print to document the impact the storm has had on both the landscape and the people who live within it.
Each print represents more than just a tree. Alongside the rings and knots, I aim to tell the story of where each tree grew, who cared for it, who eventually cut it up, and how its presence, or loss, has affected people’s lives. Through these stories, the trees become records of memory.
I’m not entirely sure where this project will lead, but it has already given me the opportunity to meet lots of people and to see parts of Cornwall that are truly beautiful. My aim is to bring these works together in an exhibition that highlights the importance of trees—not only environmentally, but socially, and to show how a single tree can hold meaning, foster connection, and help build community, even after it has fallen.
If you have a section of timber from a lost tree, or know of a landmark/woodland/individual who might want to contribute to the project, please get in touch via the contact page. If you'd like a personal print for yourself, then click here
